She was becoming.
She wasn’t what she had been but had yet to develop into
what she would be. All she was before ceased to exist; all she had done faded away.
The scents, tastes, and memories long departed. She exhausted the present, and soon she would be
what was next.
She would be spectacular.
All would change because she had transformed.
The sepia casing chafed away with the winds of time and she
was left naked, exposed, raw. She had grown. She was new…and different. She tested her wings in the wind and found
them strong.
She had become.

Very nice! I loved "the sepia casing" — it gave me some great mental imagery. I will admit I thought it was a metaphorical transformation until I read it the second time. I was really interested to know what she was before and what she had become, until I realized you were actually writing about the moth!
ReplyDeleteIt'a a bit of both, actually - literal and proverb. We all go through changes and hopefully come out the other side bigger and better for it. Thank you for reading!

This was beautiful. I agree with plowright above, that you were writing about the moth but there are definatley layers of meaning here. Enjoyed it very much. Here's mine: http://postcardfiction.com/2012/05/25/despite-your-intentions/
ReplyDeleteOh so many layers...I'm glad you caught that! Thank you...

Oh, this was gorgeous, Susan. Descriptive and even mysterious, even though we knew what was happening. Your rhythm in your prose was perfect, so that the becoming was paced and placed in a way that was simply sublime.

Sublime...ah, one of my favorite words. Thank you for relating it to my work this week. I appreciate it greatly!

Very philosophical piece. Evolving into something beautiful is a very positive and uplifting point of view. Thanks for reading and commenting on my story.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you like this...I was hesitant to post it because I didn't think it was good enough. Thank you kindly!

Susan -- as always, I enjoyed this very much. I like the less concrete way you approached the prompt. It pushed me into emotion in a really effective way.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Lime! I've missed seeing your posts for some time now - the list over at Madison's is getting longer each week. I'm headed your way now!

So much truth here, for all of us.

Thank you. I think so too...like I wrote above, we all go through our own private metamorphosis at one time or another - or maybe more than once.

Loved the metamorphosis focus, Susan. This worked on many levels.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Madison. And, as always...thank you for the Fictioneers!
