Flash Fiction #26
While the human body could only go three days without water, it was capable of surviving for upwards of three weeks without food. Those extreme measures were not yet necessary, so Christine inventoried her stores and opted to eat half of the peanut butter sandwich and the baggie of seedless green grapes. The sandwich would provide fuel through carbs and protein. The juicy sugars of the grapes would give her strength and hydrate her body. She savored every last morsel including the tiniest tart globes and then carefully pocketed her garbage to avoid leaving a telltale sign of her travels.
Above is another hundred word chunk from my *finished* 59,286 word novel. Read and enjoy. (I added a tag if you care to read the previous offerings. Click on "Next Steps," the tentative title, to see more).
While you're here, fellow Fictioneers, post a comment or two and leave a tron trail to your blog. PS - If you are not a Fictioneer, check out Madison's blog to get the scoop on how you too can play!

oo very "into the wild"-ish. Can't help asking questions, where's she going, why, etc...nice! m on d list.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure where she is going, but she is running for her life. Thank you for reading and commenting.

Where's she going, why, and who is on her trail? Good snippet from your longer work. :)

I posted links to a bit of the back story. And, thank you for the compliment. It gives me hope for the whole enchilada!

Will we be getting any more? I'm intrigued and now want to find the truth of it. Nicely written :-)

As the photo prompts lead me, I will post more. (I did link all the past ones under "Next Steps" - the tentative title).
DeleteThank you for stopping by.
~Susan
I shall look forward to them Susan and go and have a look at the past ones too :-)
DeleteI'm glad to hear it and look forward to your continued feedback.

Great teaser for the longer piece. You give a glimpse into the story while somehow revealing very little and making the reader want more.
ReplyDeleteThank you very much. The story is written and the chunks come naturally with some of the photo prompts. I'm glad you liked it!

What?? You mean besides reading another however-many Friday Fictioneers for this week, I have to bone up on your novel? Help me!!! :-) Seriously, this is an excellent snippet. Are you doing a story that includes all the prompts or did this one just fit in? When I have a bit more time, I'll try to catch up.
ReplyDeleteIf the prompt snags a section of my story, I go with it. Other than that, I write regular flash fiction. I added a tag above "Next Steps" if you are interested in seeing the other few. I think there are only four total.
DeleteThanks for reading...perhaps some day it will be in your local library, and you will know "the rest of the story."

This clip tied in superbly with the photo. It's a nice teaser and leaves us all curious and thirsty for more. Well done.

Hi Susan,
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing a glimpse of your novel and congratulations for finishing it. Novels are a gigantic inventive and creative effort, so celebrate the moment! The passage you selected makes me want to read more.
Ron
Thanks, Ron. I love the support I've received from my fellow fictioneers. Your encouragement keeps me going.

I feel like Christine is going somewhere. If this is part of your book I'd love to see the rest of it. Personally I don' think I'd have Christine's discipline.
ReplyDeleteThanks for commenting on my story here's the link for others: http://remakingme-atiyatownes.blogspot.com/2012/07/friday-fictioneers-under-vines.html
She is, Atiya...both physically and mentally, I think. She went to the woods to work out some glitches in her life and is finding answers in some unexpected ways.
DeleteThank you for stopping by!

Dear Susan,
ReplyDeleteI want to read your finished novel. Keep us in th eloop. Loved this snippet. Thanks for your fine comments on mine. You divined correctly that the 'shining love' is the Sun, and saw the double meanings i tried to imbue the story with. Keen eyes, receptive heart.
Aloha,
Doug
...as you wish.

Thank you for visiting. She is all about survival at this point in the story.

Those tiny grapes are always so bitter! I could totally taste them. Wow. That's cool that it's from your novel! Thank you for stopping by my blog...I'll be exploring yours!
ReplyDeleteWaste not, want not seems to me her motto right now. She will need everything she has (in her pack and in her spirit) to survive this.

a story AND a science lesson. thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'm thirsty now sitting here reading that. Is she lost out on the trail, in some wilderness? Even in such peril she feels the need to carry out her garbage. I enjoyed, Susan. Thanks.
